DISTINCTIVE SPECIALTY!
Pacific NW Invertebrate ID Specialty
aka Critters without backbones!

(taught by Janna )

  • About 4 - 5 hours of classroom time
  • Two Open Water survey dives
  • Student receives PADI Pacific NW Invertebrate ID Distinctive Specialty Certification
  • Class fees (including Certification) - $150

Ready to enhance your dives by learning more about the spineless critters you see? You'll learn how to monitor the 44 species that are surveyed through the Living REEF project, and even more, including anemones, starfish, nudibranchs, octopus, crab, etc.

Most of the photos for the course were taken by me in my dives around the Pacific NW! And really, the photos aren't THAT bad...:)

REEF and the Living Oceans Society combined forces as the Living REEF Project and created this course, written by Dana Haggarty and Susan Francis.

This is a PADI specialty class, and can count as one of your specialties towards your Master Scuba Diver rating. You'll be one of the few in the WORLD to carry a PADI Pacific NW Invertebrate ID certification card! (very cool!)

This class is FUN! Hands on, no boring scientific lectures, plenty of student interaction!

Optional but recommended materials:

  • Whelks to Whales text - $19.95
  • REEF Starter Kit - $15

To receive the PADI Pacific NW Invertebrate ID specialty certification, and the REEF Level II surveyor rating, students will need to:

  • attend both class sessions
  • pass the quiz with 80% or higher
  • go on two dives with me
  • complete two invertebrate surveys on those dives

Materials recommended for the class are:

  • Whelks to Whales, Rick M. Harbo, Harbour Publishing (ISBN: 1-55017-183-6).  1-800-667-2988 $19.95

  • REEF Starter Kit: This includes the yellow slate, underwater picture Invertebrate and Fish ID cards, pencil, BCD tag, sticker, two survey forms, and 2 sheets of underwater survey paper. $15

This class is great for the beginner who knows little or nothing about Invertebrate ID, and also great for those who want to brush up on what they already know and learn even more!
