Twanoh State Park
- by Janna Nichols

Three Spined Sticklebacks!! Another diver had seen these before at this site, and I wanted to see 'em for myself! Also it was the Site of the Month for the Pacific NW Critterwatchers and we wanted to do some surveys there. So off I went with some fellow critterwatchers to find and photograph these critters.

What did we find?

  • NO fish. (Well, there was one lone tubesnout)
  • Bad Viz
  • A whole lotta Leather Stars

And I mean well over a hundred Leather Stars. Never before seen so many. Usually you'll spot a few on your dives, but these guys were everywhere! This particular one was hitchhiking on top of a Lewis' Moonsnail.

My buddy and I stayed mostly in the eelgrass beds (in a whopping 10 foot depth) for our first dive, and that's where these critters were. They were all in the baby - teenager size too. No adults around.

The others found a Giant Nudibranch, which is who I suspect laid these eggs.

There were also quite a few Tube-Dwelling Anemones, which Giant Nudibranchs love to munch on.

This mud star was in the shallows.

Current is minimal at this site since it's located in the Great Bend of Hood Canal, in the Southern end. Just not a lot of action and life here.

Unless, of course, you're a Leather Star.
